In the Dead of the Night

Julia Leighton struggled across the rough terrain of dark ranch land wondering what had ever possessed her to come out alone, in the dead of night, to check out the anonymous tip about cattle smuggling that had been phoned into her office at the Texas consumer affairs agency. Moments later, her worst fears were realized, as she found herself looking down the barrel of a rifle.
