Templeton has wit, a strong narrative sense and a dab hand with atmospherics.’ Literary Review.

On Scotland’s south-east coast, where the wind cuts sharp as a butcher’s knife, the cliffs of St Abb’s Head rise raw above the North Sea. Inland lies Tarleton — a prosperous fishing port, outwardly respectable, yet steeped in secrets.

A car door opens and a young woman leaps out. There’s a smile on her face. The wind snatches her long blonde hair as she races to the cliff edge twenty feet away.
Then she jumps.

Weeks later, in the nearby town of Tarleton, DCI Kelso Strang arrives to investigate a series of farm thefts. Soon he’s involved in something far darker.

Meanwhile, new resident, Sarah Lindsay steps up to testify against a local bully. But when the case collapses, she’s shunned by the town.

Then her husband is found dead. It’s assumed he took his own life. But Sarah doesn’t believe it — and nor does Detective Strang.

Two people dead in one small town, seemingly by their own hand. This is no coincidence.

But the residents of Tarleton are used to closing ranks and unless Strang can prise open the town’s secrets, more lives will be lost.

A chilling, atmospheric Scottish mystery, perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves, Peter May, Caro Ramsay, Daniel Sellers and Val McDermid.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
DI Kelso Strang, once an army sniper and now a senior officer with the Edinburgh police force, is still reeling from the sudden death of his wife. It left him hollow, short-tempered, and increasingly difficult to reach. His job is the only thing that keeps him going. He now lives alone in a harbour cottage, where silence suits him better than small talk and black coffee keeps him steady. He reads old poetry, owns far too many maps and has a scar down one side of his face that people don’t ask about twice.
