Nick is a twelve-year-old boy, living in Potomac Maryland, who loves baseball. When his grandparents' house burns to the ground one night, he follows his Hungarian grandfather's cryptic instructions to fly to Paris, France, and meet with a woman named Emma.
Upon arrival, he learns that Emma has been murdered. Nick, suddenly alone in a foreign country, is befriended by Elizabeth Crowder, an American journalist working in Paris. Elizabeth is also the lover of Craig Page, former CIA Director of the US.
In searching for the cause of the fire, Nick, Elizabeth and Craig uncover a plot by Russian President Kuznov to recreate the Soviet Empire in Eastern and Central Europe. The linchpin of Kuznov's plan is an agreement with a corrupt Hungarian Prime Minister to permit Russia to move troops into Hungary.
In this fast-paced thriller, Elizabeth, in exotic Budapest, and Craig in Russia, are repeatedly attacked as they race against the clock to thwart Kuznov's sinister plan.
