The Warlord Sharon Letts had kidnapped the President. She had been working behind the scenes to sway the loyalty some of serving members of the military and hundreds of local militias. She aimed to break away from the broken union and form her own nation.

She had managed to turn many of the staff and guards at the Mount Weather Shelter facility switch sides and support her. She knew something about the shelter she didn’t believe most knew; the real shelters weren’t the buildings in the mountains of Virginia. There were seven levels under the main building. She also knew the buildings were connected by miles of tunnels.

Crockett’s Delta company was joined by recently promoted Rand, who was now a full colonel. The Delta’s had discovered information that Letts was planning on taking the President to the shelter. Rand and a small number of Delta’s brought one of the Delta’s stealth helicopters in an attempt to arrive at Mount Weather before Letts.

They didn’t plan on most of the staff and guards were loyal to Letts. They put up a strong defense before Rand remembered there were a series of tunnels that connected the buildings. They discovered a map that showed an escape tunnel on the other side of the mountain.

Upon entering the tunnels the patrol discovered the walls and floors had been polished glass smooth by the thermal pulse that had raced through the tunnels from the explosions at the Pentagon and the Capital. All of the maps saying, “You are here” had been melted. Two scouts ran ahead down the legs of the tunnel matrix before they reported hearing noise behind one of the sealed doors.

Crockett sent two to retrieve their torch so they could cut through the door, when they did, they were surprised to see a small number of survivors who had been in the basement of the Pentagon when the alarm sounded, they knew where the escape tunnel was. They jumped in a parked security car and sped to the mountains. They ran to the first unlocked door they discovered. The thermal wave sealed them in the room without power. They had almost finished the water and MREs they’d discovered in the room they were sealed in. Once released they led the Delta squad to the main building.

The time the Deltas had spent searching for the emergency door and then wandering around the maze of tunnels had allowed Letts to beat them to the main building. Once Crockett entered the main shelter, he learned those troops loyal to Letts wore a blue armband, and the American flag patch on their arms had been replaced with a new flag, the flag of Letts’ new nation.

Captain Gold was trying to get to Mount Weather to reunite with Rand. She had an accident when she ran into the rear of a car traveling at only 20Mph. She was stopped by phony cops and constantly wanted to change vehicles, her subconscious was telling her she had to change vehicles so whoever was tracking her didn’t catch her. She didn’t realize no one could track her because the internet was done and there weren’t active police departments driving the freeways.

Back at Fort Huachuca the Secretary of Defense was sworn in as President until President McCarthy was safely to office. Acting President Morton faced a new problem: the creation of micronations. The smallest was located in Nevada, the largest in the Northeast, followed by Letts’ in the Southeast and, of course, the ‘Peoples Republic of the West Coast.’ Morton sent the returning Marines to shut down the rebelling micronations before they could spread and lead to the permanent breakup of America.

The fight was on to save the nation and save the president who’d sworn to rebuild the nation he loved.
