Having read all of Lesley's recent novels and thoroughly enjoyed them I wasn't sure what to expect from her first novel written about 30 years ago. I was advised by a friend that it's very different to her recent work, after all time has moved on.
The novel is split between London and Sydney and centres around a chance meeting on a tube train between two women and how their lives become interlinked. Deborah is strong, confident and knows who she is; May on the other hand lacks confidence, is still searching for her true self and after Deborah's murder slowly comes to terms with who she is. May also learns that sometimes you have to fight for what and who you want in life. As Clare Balding wrote in her recent autobiography 'I realised that I was looking in the wrong part of the library' and that for me sums up May.
Compared to many novels it's quite short only 205 pages, but it packs a lot into those pages. Luckily I was able to source it from a second hand bookseller as it's now out of print.
Genre: General Fiction
