On August 8, 1944, the German army marched into the tiny French village of St. Julien de Crempse. Every man and boy in the village was lined up at the edge of a ditch, while a young German captain personally delivered the coup de grace into each victim's temple with his pistol. Only one young boy survived, Pierre Fargaudie, who witnessed the slaughter of his father and brother from the rafters of his family's barn.
Fifty years later, retired CIA agent Hank Mathias has bought a home in the village. One evening, Hank invites the Fargaudies over for dinner; during the meal, he retreats to his wine cellar to pick out the perfect vintage for his guests. When he returns to his kitchen, Hank finds Madame Fargaudie shot to death on the patio and Pierre Fargaudie lying seconds away from death in the garden. Struggling, Pierre whispers that the German captain who killed his family is back.
