Too Good to Forget

(1991)
A novel by

The Girl - Katherine McDonald, author and pet-rescuing shut-in. She's 39 years old and hasn't known true love, so she busies herself with her spy thriller novels and putting up with her wisecracking, live-in cousin Andrew, who runs a bookstore. For publicity purposes, she pretends she's married to a federal agent called Sam McDonald, who is the "co-author" of her books, in order to lend them authenticity and shield her from the pain of having a love life. The Guy - Sam McDonald, Treasury agent. (No, not Katherine's fake husband. At least not yet.) He lost his wife to cancer years ago and is filling the hurt with his job and his fascination with Katherine McDonald. Subconsciously, he has been thinking of her as his wife because he shares the same name as her "husband." The Setup - Sam and his friend George are on a stakeout to find out who's behind a gun smuggling operation. This naturally takes place on a foggy pier in the dead of night. And DUN-DUN-DUN! The bad guy is their boss! George gets killed, Sam gets winged, and gets away. He arrives at a book signing of Katherine's and kisses her in front of everybody! He thinks he's her husband (*cough*AMNESIA!*cough*), and Katherine finds herself eagerly responding and already half in love with him by the time they get home after getting shot at by Sam's hot-on-their-trail boss outside the bookstore. (I know Borders can be murder, but still...) From here on the evil Harley magic starts to work. I know what's going to happen, but for some freakin' reason, I want to read it anyway. The Good Stuff - Hard to put a finger on why I think it deserves 3 stars. There was a dog. (Yay!)
