Jane Brown was now Mrs. Billy Yates and happier than she had ever been in her young life. She rode the ranch with Billy almost every day, checking cattle and horses but still missed Bessie May and the plantation back home in Mississippi.
She wrote and received a letter at least once a month from Bessie May, yes and even wrote one to her father and his family.
As she opened and read a letter from Bessie May, her heart skipped a beat. Billy saw that on her face. “What’s wrong?”
With tears in her eyes, she handed him the letter.
“Oh Billy, what am I to do?”
“I’ll ride over and show this to J C. Being a Texas Ranger maybe he’ll know how we can get it back.”
“I don’t see how anyone can just come in and take another person’s property.”
