The very beautiful Jane Brown was the most beautiful girl any of the folks around Vicksburg Mississippi had ever seen. From the age of twelve when she started developing, boys hung around her like dogs after a meat bone.
She would have nothing to do with any of them, they were as dirt poor as she and her grandma. She, and a colored girl Bessie May, would sit on the bank of the Mississippi River and watch steamboats slowly pass by with well-dressed folks partying and dancing.
“Bessie May, one day Jane Brown will be as rich as any of those fancy ladies and I will be invited to all of their parties and balls. Jane brown will be looked up to, not looked down on.”
“That I hope you are, Jane. I will pray that comes true then one day it might.”
