Fortunately, Zach is befriended by a beautiful woman named Matilda, a girl who Crazy Mamie plans to take and sell to a wealthy man. Zach promises to help Matilda. Together, they plan their escape. However, even though Zach escapes, Matilda is recaptured.
Now, Zach must make a gut-wrenching decision: Save Matilda from a short, harsh life as a whore or continue his hunt and return to his family before winter and the Starving Time.
