Commodore Jack Hunter is dead. His sacrifice brought the Colonial War to an end, and saved all of humanity from final annihilation.
His legacy, his work, still lives on, and now Nick Kozak, formerly an officer in the defunct Republic Marine Corps, assumes command of Samarkand, flagship of a new fleet, restored and repaired, a new crew venturing forth, determined to preserve the fragile peace that their late commander won at a terrible cost, as both the Federation and Republic collapse in the wake of the war, the Free Worlds threatening to turn on each other and destroy everything that they had worked for.
And out on the Rim, on the fringes of explored space, a new menace rises to threaten the remnants of interstellar civilization, a mystery and a threat a million years in the making, buried deep in the soil of a long-forgotten world. Can Captain Kozak and his crew find a way to keep the peace, or is the endless war that Jack Hunter died to end destined to resume once more…
