Jess heads to Carrolton, Texas, in search of the killer, Logan Little. While there, hes forced to kill one of the hired guns for a rich cattle rancher. The rancher, Bob Beesley, decides that Jess must somehow pay for the killing, even though it was justified.
A battle begins between Jess and Beesley, who has more money than sense. County Sheriff Ralph Mason, whos in Beesleys pocket, tries to reason with Beesley on the matter, but hes used to getting his way, no matter how much money it costs.
Beesley sends out a message, offering one thousand dollars cash for any man who will challenge Jess to a duel to the death.
