Singing River

(1934)
A novel by

When Sad Sontag and Swede Harrison stumble upon the apparently lifeless body of "Sheep King" Dan Reynolds in San Francisco, they flee the hangman's noose to Singing River, Wyoming - a place mentioned in a telegram in Reynolds's room. But once they're taken on at the Two Bar J P, they find themselves caught up in a war of sheepmen versus cattlemen. Reynolds, needing more range for his sheep, has a finger in every pie, and spies across the land, including one at the Two Bar J P. Soon Sad and Swede are suspected of working for the sheepmen, while the recovering Reynolds is after them for helping the cattlemen. Just about everyone wants to capture or kill the two pards, it seems - but when the bullets start to fly, they're determined to stand their ground and see justice served.
