Anne Valente recommends
This Impossible Brightness (2024)
Jessica Bryant Klagmann
"At once haunting and visionary, Jessica Bryant Klagmann's This Impossible Brightness asks us to consider ghosts in their many forms - literal ghosts, the ghosts of grief that follow all of us, and the ghost of a present-but-disappearing earth amid climate devastation. In the face of sweeping loss, this novel resists despair by weaving an expansive web of interconnectedness and also of hope. Klagmann's debut is both wildly imaginative and gorgeously moving."
Eli Harpo's Adventure to the Afterlife (2024)
Eric Schlich
"Eric Schlich is one of the most imaginative writers I've ever read. In Eli Harpo's Adventure to the Afterlife, Schlich introduces us to a boy-turned-adult looking back on a near-death experience that may or may not have shown him heaven. This novel takes readers on a family road trip to Bible World, a religious theme park brought to kaleidoscopic life on the page, and on Eli's lifelong quest to unveil the truth of his own life. Narrated with humor, heart and pathos, this is a boisterous and beautiful book."
Dioramas (2023)
Blair Austin
"Dioramas impressed me not only with its innovative structure and voice-driven narrative, but with its careful attention to the meticulous details of the world it weaves on the page. This is an absorbing and remarkable novel."
