This is a deeply feminist novel that mainly unfolds over a few months in 1939. I love Vanderhaeghe's writing, which sets up and wraps up the narratives so well and yet provides such complex and thought-provoking insights along the way. I enjoyed my time in the minds and thoughts of these characters and the ways in which their lives were overshadowed by politics and war, even when they wanted to reject those worlds. I appreciated the many Canadian gems here as usual with Vanderhaeghe. The Mac Paps, the prairies, the Fort Garry hotel, St. Hilda's school. Great stuff.
