After the fairly disastrous end of her first year at the magical Linden Academy, Addie just wanted to spend the summer relaxing at home. But her parents’ unexpected kidnapping makes her feel like the floor has fallen out from underneath her, not to mention changes her vacation plans entirely. To ensure her own safety, she returns to Evvalor and uses her free months to hone the often volatile forces within her and learn more about the land she came from.

But her parents’ disappearance and the price required to get them back from their captor, the Queen of Darkness, hangs over her head like a shadow. Having no choice but to return to school, Addie determines that this year will be different, but unfortunately for her, you can’t always have everything you want. Many of the students don’t trust her after last year’s ball, and her soul aches from what she went through, especially as the darkness threatens to devour the man she loves, who’s still separated from her. As much as she wishes she could erase the past, Addie has to make amends to those she’s hurt, and she’ll quickly learn that’s not as easy as it sounds.

When the Queen of Darkness arrives to demand Addie’s magic as payment for her parents release, refusal could bring Addie’s entire world crashing down, but so could surrender. With it, the Queen of Darkness will be free to wreak havoc on all of Evvalor, and if Addie doesn’t give it up, her parents will die. Ultimately, she will have to decide if she’s going to let the trials of life consume her, or if she will finally harness her powers of light and rise anew.
