This fictional short story is from the case files of Judge Lu, a magistrate who lives in late 14th century to early 15th century China. As the legal and civic head of his jurisdiction, the magistrate is nearly all-powerful within his community. In his judicial role, Judge Lu acts as the investigator, prosecutor, defense attorney, judge, and jury. This gives him tremendous control, influence, and responsibility. At the same time, he only holds office for three years in any one location before being moved on to another. Although designed to prevent building close ties and nepotism, it often leads to rampant corruption within the system. Judge Lu's first series case is an attempted rape. He is faced with the challenge of bringing justice and order to his community while - at the same time--avoiding the morass of corruption that exists at every turning point.
