Lancelot is an account of the decline of post-Roman Britain narrated by Lancelot. A brilliant evocation of a barely documented period of British history - the twilight era at the end of the 5th century when Roman rule was just a memory and power was held precariously by factious tribal chiefs. Roman tradition has raised one of these men - Arthur - to the status of a folk hero; here, however, as Artorius, the dux belli, he is a tough and cunning bandit king, a master on the field of battle but inept and uncomfortable in peace time. A highly individual interpretation of a famous legend, Lancelot is also a vivid and exciting recreation of a crucial time in Britain's history.
