240pp , IN ENGLISH, ABOUT THE AUTHOR :: Auberon Alexander Waugh ; November 17, 1939 to 16 in 2001) was an English journalist , and the eldest son of Evelyn Waugh. He was well known by his nickname ' Bron ' . After a traditional classical education at Downside School, was commissioned in the Army for National Service, where he was severely injured in a shooting accident . He went on to study for a year at Oxford. At twenty , he began his career in Fleet Street in the Telegraph Group, though he also wrote for many other media , including Private Eye , presenting a profile that was Tory grandee half and half rebel cheeky. He is remembered for his joke - campaign to stand for Parliament as a candidate for the Party of dog lovers ' , reminding voters that the sitting MP Jeremy Thorpe had been accused of launching an assassination attempt , which had resulted in the killing of a dog. As a young man, Waugh wrote five novels which were very well received , but gave up the fiction, for fear of unfavorable comparisons with his father. He and his wife Mrs. Teresa had four children , and lived in his ancestral home in Combe Florey in Somerset.Waugh began his journalistic career in 1960 as a cub reporter in Peterborough , the pillar of the social / Gossip The Daily Telegraph. In the long and prolific career that followed he wrote for The Spectator , New Statesman , Medicine and several British newspapers ( including the Daily Mirror , Daily Mail, Evening Standard and The Independent) . From 1981-1990 he wrote a leader column for The Sunday Telegraph pages . His work as a political columnist for El Espectador coincided with the war in Biafra , a predominantly Catholic province that had tried to secede from Nigeria. Waugh blasted Harold Wilson government ' s , especially the Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart, for agreeing on the use of mass starvation as a political weapon . He was fired from The Spectator in 1970, but with the support of Bernard Levin and others won compensati
