It is 1840. The Royal Navy has entered the Victorian Age. In China, it is about to become engaged in what will become the First Opium War, caused by the Chinese Emperor wishing to curtail the importation of the drug by the British and other traders into his Country, in exchange for which the Chinese exported things such as fine silks. Captain Edward Courtenay, in his steamship Titan, and stationed at The Cape, is required to join a squadron under the command of Rear-admiral Sebastian Hoxton and join the main Fleet in Chinese waters to restore the trading position. In the Mediterranean, one Mehemet Ali, ruler of Egypt, is doing that which many other tyrants had done before him, and was attempting to take nearby countries such as Syria and The Lebanon away from their rightful rulers, much against the wishes of the Great Powers of the day. Major Timothy Courtenay RM commands a contingent of Royal Marines under Lieutenant-general Sir Nicholas Strathmore as part of the Fleet sent to prevent Ali's plans. At home, Admiral Giles Courtenay, Viscount Wellswood, is far from taking life easy, being called upon to advise the Admiralty and to fight the Government's cause in the Lords, which he does with his usual skill. In the meantime, Edward and Timothy continue the Courtenay tradition of being at the forefront of the fighting.
