Hoping to do right by their young children, struggling yuppies Alden and Brooke move their family into the nicest house they can afford - on the worst street in an affluent California city. It's a point of contention in their relationship, but not the only one: Alden has just lost his ad agency job and spends his days away from home ostensibly looking for work, leaving Brooke alone to manage the children. To make matters more troubling, their three-year-old, Marlowe, hasn't met some critical developmental milestones, a fact that that naturally worries Brooke. As she takes stock of their lives - and their lifestyle - she feels a rising tide of anxiety over their lack of income, their expensive farmers' market cuisine, Marlowe's speech therapy, the Prius. So when a nosey neighbor raises suspicions about Alden's comings and goings outside the house, the moment is ripe for further doubt and disillusionment.
