A young man, nominally Jewish, plans to marry his Episcopalian girlfriend at her church. While researching the family tree to present to the couple, his mother unravels a story she never imagined: hundreds of years of flight - from the Church! She tries to convince him to respect the faith she never taught him, while trying to fend off the bride's mother, an uncompromising clerical official. The morning of the wedding, the mother's house burns to the ground. The Inquisition is over - but not the fire. "An astonishing work... a funny, daring, and ultimately searing book that is both a pleasure to read and too painful to forget." Newsday
