ea. vol: Severn House, dist. by Mercedes. f Severn House, a London publisher, is reissuing in hardcover books that have been published previously in the United States as mass market paperbacks. Anything Sanders writes now becomes an instant bestseller. The short stories collected here involve ''Wolf'' Lannihan, a private investigator for Triple-I, a company specializing in insurance fraud cases. The tales, published in 1968-69 in magazine format, then released as a paperback in 1986, are slightly dated in that Lannihan must have a drink in his hand while thinking, and the women characters are all either sex objects or criminals. The stories, though not great, show the promise of what Sander's will later achieve in The Timothy File (1987) and Timothy's Game (1988), which are also loosely connected stories involving an investigator who is more in keeping with the 1980s. Winston's name has long been familiar to readers of romantic suspense, and in this novel from 1973 she adds a touch of occult and horror to the usual mix of a young woman in trouble. After the breakup of her marriage, Gilly Davis takes the job of companion to a beautiful invalid. From the first moment of her arrival Gilly senses something sinister at Walker Hall mansion.
