Marjorie Pope was an extremely pretty young lady - a young lady who had found her own mind despite her father's insistence that she was still a child and had much to learn. It came as rather a shock to Mr Pope then to discover that Marjorie was all set to wed. But in their domestic set up, marriage was not the 'happy ever after' Marjorie had been led to believe; instead it was the very beginning of a drama that would see her wrestle with social convention and domesticity in the light of her new found passion and ambition. On first publication, Marriage elicited an enraged response from feminists and traditionalists alike for its treatment of the complex interplay between sex and society.
