Little did Gail Thornton know how a chance meeting on the sea-front one wild wintery day was going to change her life. She had always longed to travel and here it was, as though out of the blue, the offer of a post as companion-secretary to Mrs Helen Marshgrove, wealthy lady of the town, who spent more time abroad than in her own beautiful home. This aging lady, troubled with arthritis, was used to being waited on hand and foot and could be irritable at times. Stephen Kirkman was chauffeur for her beautiful car and was in control of all her travel arrangements - a generous, happy-go-lucky, flirtatious fellow. Within a short time of Gail's appointment they are off to the Bahamas and later still to Spain, where Mrs Marshgrove is keen for Gail to meet her bachelor nephew, Lucas.
