Mackenzie Gallagher, a truck-stop waitress from Detroit, impresses a congressman with her political savvy just hours before his untimely death in an auto accident. When his good-natured recommendation of her becomes public, the media converge upon her, demanding to know why she thinks she is qualified to run for Congress. Their rudeness convinces her to run. Later she meets Ben Davidson, a high school science teacher, who offers to help her in her campaign. As their friendship turns into something more serious, Ben wonders what will happen to his plans for a temple marriage?
