When she was younger, Renee never dreamed of having a husband as successful as James. But a savings account couldn’t keep her warm at night. She rarely complained about his work hours, but today she looked forward to her man being there when she got home.

“My day keeps getting worse,” she griped.

“Baby, it’s not that bad. You’ll still be up when I get home.”

“Maybe I will. Maybe I won’t.”

“I’ll make it worth your while,” James promised.

Renee smiled. She was certainly eager for him to try. But they had a hurdle in the sex department, and she doubted if James was willing to jump it tonight. How long has it been? she wondered. She figured at least three months had passed since the last time she was able to coax him into it. Renee decided she was due, if not because of the time that passed, then at least for the terrible day she’d been having.

“Are you gonna hurt me?” she asked tentatively. Her heart was already starting to race.

After a noticeable pause, James said, “No. But I will make love to you, as a husband should make love to his wife.”

That was his typical response. Renee was not deterred.

“What if I don’t want you to make love to me?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess you can go to sleep horny.”

Renee found this banter amusing, but she didn’t want him to know that.

“I’m having a terrible day,” she reiterated. “And it’s been a long time since you did that for me.”

“It hasn’t been that long,” James said. “It was Saturday, April 13th.”

Renee was stunned by that. “You remember the exact date?”

“When a man does those things to his wife, it’s not easy to forget.”

“You make it sound like it’s hurting you in some way.”

“Renee, I’m working just as hard as you are today. I don’t want any trouble when I get home.”

“You’re probably gonna have some.”

“I’m not going there with you tonight. I’m serious.”

“I understand that you’re serious. I want you to be serious.”

“Stop playing around.”

“Only if you make me.”

He sighed loudly into the phone. “I love you, baby. But you’re starting to piss me off.”

“Perfect,” she said. “That’s a good start.”

“Renee, it’s not gonna wor–”

She hung up on him.
