Western reads are hot now in the publishing world and TV (think Yellowstone). This book combines the beautiful desert imagery you expect from a Hillerman prize winner and a compelling story about a disgraced newspaper man named Kepler, who after running from a difficult situation, finds himself in a small railroad town that supports a nearby mine. Kepler steps off the train and into a series of bloody murders that no one wants to talk about. Attacks by a beast seem to occur at the same time a mysterious wealthy man and his beautiful female ward visit the town. The pair travel along the railway in a sumptuous railcar, death trailing them. As more and more bodies pile up in the winter snow, will the hero revert back to the man he was--one who runs at the first sign of trouble? Or will he stay and hunt down a pair of killers who are stalking the people he's come to care about? I recommend this read, four stars, especially the thrilling--and freezing cold--chase at the end of the book.
