Jerusalem at the time of Jesus was a beautiful, bustling, and brutal place- a holy city reeling under the impact of Roman occupation, seething with revolt, treachery, and deceit. Dumachas- a fearless, passionate spokesman for independence- had become a kind of king in the underworld in Jerusalem. Young, handsome, fiercely intelligent, he defended an challenged and inspired the oppressed of the city, daring them to hope and to fight for freedom. Rebellion for Dumachas would mean imprisonment at the hands of the Romans- separation from the extraordinary woman, called Sheba, who had been his lover since youth. It would end in spectacular death: on a cross at Calvary next to Jesus of Nazareth. But the example of Dumachas, his spirit and his strength, would change forever the lives of everyone who knew him, who loved him, who followed him.
