Ruth Pennington's unhappy marriage ended after ten years with her husband, Tony, being killed in a car crash. Then, while she was on holiday in Holland, months afterwards, trying to recover from the effects of this disaster she met John Forester. He also was recently widowed and the friendship which sprang up between them soon developed into love. To Ruth it seemed this second marriage promised to give her all that she had been denied in the first, but John's discovery, on the eve of a house hunting expedition, of his previous wife's diary threatened to topple their new found happiness.
