Alex Kovacs was pretty close to being an accidental spy. He was the kind of person who avoided getting involved in pretty much every aspect of his life, until time and circumstances and the murder of his uncle by the Gestapo forced him to act. Since then, he worked to warn the people of Austria, the land where he grew up, about the impending German invasion in 1938. Then, he tried and failed to convince the Allies that the Germans were about to invade France. And then, he followed the woman he loved to Lyon and joined the Resistance.
In these next three books of the Alex Kovacs thriller series, it is the Resistance life that Alex lives -- sometimes in the country as a hit-and-run terrorist of sorts trying to hobble the Nazis however he can; sometimes in the city, especially in Paris, where the stakes grow higher and higher with each passing year of the war. Alex sees things and does things that he never would have imagined possible before the war. He sees death and torture. He kills men with little remorse. He changes. He hardens. He hates himself at times. Yet, within him -- buried beneath so much of the sadness and brutality -- there is a constant desire to do the right thing and to fight for the oppressed.
