The Adventure of the Distracted Thane
(2019)(A book in the Sherlock Holmes series)
A Novella by Robert Wilton
'Gripping and witty ... A must read for fans of Sherlock and Shakespeare alike.' Richard Foreman, author of Raffles: The Complete Innings.'
'So we rode again into Scotland, Sherlock Holmes and I; only this time we came at the head of an army.'
A beautiful woman comes out of a storm to tell her macabre tale, and thus the legendary detective is confronted with his strangest case: the murder of King Duncan of Scotland, and the ascent to the throne of the haunted Macbeth.
Holidaying in Scotland, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson receive a disturbing and lovely visitor: Lady Macbeth is worried that her husband, newly-returned from war, is tormented by strange dreams and ambitions. Accepting her invitation to visit, Holmes and Watson find themselves in the middle of a murder. The king has been assassinated in the night, and Holmes must investigate the crime, surrounded by suspicious and angry men jostling for the throne.
The detective's unique talents reveal some unexpected truths, but the royal castle becomes more dangerous than before. Soon Holmes and Watson are accompanying an English invasion of Scotland, to help restore the rightful heir to the throne. But then a desperate message from Lady Macbeth summons Watson, and the good doctor must survive the final battle for Scotland inside the enemy camp, amid desperation, violence and madness.
Dr Watson's narrative reveals the untold story behind Shakespeare's play: a kingdom in chaos, a man possessed, and bloody murder.
Robert Wilton is the author of the prize-winning Comptrollerate-General series of historical novels.
In praise of Death and the Dreadnought:
'A superb historical thriller. Wilton blends action and humour to create a page turner to rival John Buchan at his best.' Saul David
Genre: Mystery
