Annie Cochrane is 44 and divorced, with a 16-year-old son of 16, when she discovers she is pregnant. There are two candidates for father - an ex-boyfriend called Tariq and the widowed leader of the Scottish Parliament called Andrew. At the same time Annie's elderly mother is becoming confused and needs care - she finds herself in the situation of having to look after a new baby and an ailing parent, on top of this the press (she's a health minister) become obsessed with finding out the identity of the father.
