American author Stewart Edward White (1873-1946) was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Using his own experiences, White wrote adventure stories of the Black Hills gold rush such as The Claim Jumpers (1901) and life in Michigan lumber camps as in The Blazed Trail (1902). Later in life, he and his wife Elizabeth wrote travel stories and experimented with writing books using spiritualism and the channeling of spirits.
