Susan Rebecca White recommends
The House is on Fire (2023)
Rachel Beanland
"In our current moment, when the house is, indeed, on fire, author Rachel Beanland points to unsung American heroes whose stories help liberate us from the limitations of our inherited narratives, all while weaving a gripping tale about what happens when disillusionment is met not with surrender, but with resilience, grit, and determination."
Millicent Glenn's Last Wish (2020)
Tori Whitaker
"Tori Whitaker’s moving novel offers a clear-eyed look at how ‘the good old days’ were not always so good, particularly when it came to women’s reproductive health and autonomy. This well-researched and timely novel made me thankful for past generations of women, who, like the titular character, fought hard for the rights I hold so dear today. An impressive debut."
The Hidden Light of Northern Fires (2017)
Daren Wang
"This excellent and timely novel asks of its characters the same galvanizing question we find ourselves facing today: Which side are you on?"
