The writers included here represent no school. They see things in different, even contradictory ways. Taken together, their stories express a variety of responses not only to the lives that they record, but also to the possibilities of language and form. Some of these pieces present us with apparently simple visions of life which somehow turn mysterious, strange, both unfamiliar and too familiar - plain doors that open on a maze. Others proceed through antic, visionary complications. The voices alter from story to story, ranging from the severely colloquial to the outrageously figurative. The one thing that all these writers have in common beyond the fact of their talent is that however they go about their business, they do mean business.
