Auckland, New Zealand, August 1943. After a mole embedded in a group of suspected traitors is found dead on the train tracks near the Auckland Train Station, Kate Hardy is asked to impersonate a very important person on an overnight train trip from Auckland to Wellington. She has been chosen for her height, but the woman she is to impersonate is even taller than she is, and significantly older.

She will be accompanied on the train trip by a Marine guard and several dignitaries. The plan is to draw the enemy fire away from the Very Important Person.

The track from Auckland to Wellington passes through miles of dense forest, tunnels through the ranges, and winding viaducts. And everywhere, the threat of attack is on the travelers’ minds.
