Bladen Cole never wanted to return to New Mexico. Still haunted by that terrible night ten years ago in Silver City, when his brother Will was murdered by the “rat-faced man,” he wanted to put bad memories behind him. But the trail of the desperadoes he followed from Colorado leads him to Santa Fe, and to a low-ceilinged café called Refugio del Viajero, where he meets Nicolette de la Gravière…a pretty young woman with lips the color of dried red chilies.

Cole’s presence in Santa Fe likewise leads him to the offices of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, where Ezra Waldron hires him to capture the perpetrators of a huge train robbery. The railroad can’t alert lawmen, because they want to keep the robbery quiet. Waldron also wants the thieves, dead or alive.

Pursuing the bandits, Cole discovers they’ve met an enigmatic figure known as “the Dutchman” and heard his tales of lost gold. Despite having stolen great wealth, the robbers want more, and have gone in search of the hoard—risking their lives and Cole’s as he attempts to bring them to justice.
