Anxious to finish his latest novel in the shortest possible time, Neill Addington rents a cottage in the quiet village of Westington, intending to cut himself off from every human contact. He finds that he cannot remain withdrawn from the village and, as life in the small community has its effect upon him, his outlook changes.
It is Anna Harris whose life is altered immeasurably by Neil's coming. Her marriage to Tom Cartwright has been postponed and, restless and unhappy, she meets Neil when both are at a disadvantage; later, she begins to help him prepare his manuscript, and finds that she has embarked also upon a journey to greater knowledge of herself.
