Growing up on New Haven was both a delight and a drag.

It was a drag because the rural lifestyle was not to everyone’s taste and certainly wasn’t Kayla’s. Unlike her sister, Kayla was not into farming, settling down and having babies.

Oh, she wouldn’t mind the practising bit, it was the getting pregnant and producing them that wasn’t to her liking – yet.

It was a delight because she got to hang around with dragons. The dragons, by and large, were not that keen to hang around with humans, so she hung around with one specific dragon and Tra’ago taught her to fly, just like Aunties Ma’shaala and Kaytee.

Being somewhat of a tomboy, she had always bucked the system, so it was no surprise that she followed her mother into military service.

Taking her father’s last name was a shrewd move, as her mother was Natasha Mackay, so when this was discovered, the bar was set very high in people’s expectations of her.

Blessed (or cursed) with certain gifts, after proving herself on active duty, she was recruited by the Specialists and given a mission…

…only she disappeared…
