A brand new Western adventure from Paul Bedford!

‘Big John’ Landsburg had lost his wife to an Apache war party, and then his Salt River cattle ranch to the guilt-ridden grief that followed. Years later, with his two sons, Josh and Nathan, he makes a fresh start in Southern Arizona. But then, as though in a recurring nightmare, it all starts again.

Captain Marcus Tench of the 4th Cavalry arrives with Landsburg’s frightened neighbours and a deal of bad news. Geronimo is on the loose again, and the new Salt River Ranch is very likely in his path as the war party makes for the perceived safety of Sonora’s Sierra Madre Mountains. Knowing that to abandon his spread will lead to certain ruin, ‘Big John’ makes the fateful decision to stay put rather than accept the offer of refuge at Fort Grant.

That night the Apaches strike. After torching the buildings, they carry off the ranch foreman to certain agonising death and twelve-year-old Nathan to trade with the Mexicans. The next morning, Landsburg and sixteen-year-old Josh reluctantly head to the fort to seek help. There the rancher has a run-in with an old enemy from his own time in the army: the ruthlessly ambitious Brigadier General Nelson Miles. After threatening to make public details of Miles’ past misdemeanours, Landsburg is assigned Captain Tench and a small detachment. From then on, they are in a race to rescue Nathan before he disappears south of the border.

Yet this will be a far from simple quest, because unknown to them they are not the only ones seeking to intercept the hostiles. Coronel Joaquin Terrazas is Mexico’s finest Indian fighter. Six years earlier he had killed Chief Victorio, and now he intends to crush Geronimo and his band, without the assistance of any damned gringos from over the border. And Terrazas is not the only hunter without any knowledge of the presence of a young white captive. Newly elected sheriff of Cochise County, ‘Texas’ John Slaughter, is out to make a name for himself, and what better way to do that than by killing a few Apaches? Together with a Tombstone posse, he aims to get to the Mexican border before they do.

With so many factions involved, bloody violence is sadly guaranteed, and only one man has no real interest in killing Indians. John Landsburg simply wants his son back in one piece, yet woe betide anyone who gets in his way!
