‘Sometimes there just ain’t no forgetting’, runs the oft-used phrase, but there are ways to at least ease the ravages of a traumatic past. For Chris Weaver, a man with a bloody history, that had meant losing himself in the relative wilderness of Nebraska Territory. Only ‘relative’, because a man still has to eat, and preferably with a roof over his head in the depths of winter. The Central Overland, California and Pike’s Peak Express Company had provided him with the way to live something like the life that he now sought. Better known as the Pony Express, it needed self-reliant loners like Weaver to man the remote swing stations that provided the remounts for the young mail riders on their epic journeys across the continent in that year of 1860. And Devil’s Gate Station is just such a place. But with frontier isolation comes inevitable danger, from wild animals, extreme weather, and of course, other humans. And as is so often the case, it was the latter threat that would require him to utilize the deadly skills learned in that damn war all those years before!
The arrival of yet another wagon train making the hazardous journey to Oregon brings unwelcome visitors and an arrogant bully, whose ill-considered actions result in a brutal conflict with the Sioux. Yet it is a chance meeting with this man’s delectable wife that makes Weaver realize that perhaps he has had his fill of solitude. But before his life can take a new direction, he first has to fight for it. Because Devil’s Gate Station soon comes under deadly siege, and there can be only one winner!
