The Glenorchan Ruby

(1982)
A novel by

Sir Robert Boyd had promised his daughter Lindsay to his squire, Ninian Stewart, in marriage, but when the Boyds and the Stewarts fell from favour with King James III of Scotland, the Glenorchan estates were given to Sir James Fielding, husband of Lindsay's sister, Elspeth.
The armies of Edward IV of England marched into Scotland to try to regain the town of Berwick and James III marshalled his forces at Lauder Bridge. But his nobles objected to James's favourites and banded together in order to separate the King from the men who were considered to be upstarts. The favourites were hanged from Lauder Bridge, among them Sir James Fielding.
Glenorchan was left without an heir, and was granted by the King to Sir Andrew Douglag who was obliged to marry Lindsay Boyd to seal the bargain. The great ruby ring which had been owned by the Boyds for generations was used at the marriage ceremony. Legend stated that it had been gifted to the Boyds by the Little People and must only be worn by the true brides of Glenorchan. But had the priest who performed the ceremony been a true priest or merely a physician? Lindsay found herself caught up in the legend which pro- phesied that the House of Glenorchan would perish if the ring was lost in salt water.
