A novel by

When Susan was out of a job, she accepted her friend Val Peacock's suggestion that she go to help out at Val's family home, Painterwood. Painterwood was a demanding sort of place, Val told her, and so were some of the people in it. Nevertheless, Susan took the chance - and indeed found herself more than a little involved with all the Peacock family - selfish, demanding Mrs. Peacock, her 'difficult'young daughter Penny, and the glamorous Roger. Susan soon found herself increasingly attracted to Roger, and felt that he returned her interest - but could she be sure that he had forgotten the glamorous Magda, to whom he had once been engaged? Where did Ellis Chrichton fit in? He paid Susan a lot of attention - but then wasn't he just as friendly with Magda - and Val? They all seemed so involved with each other; yet sometimes Susan felt that the only thing that mattered to any of them in the end was - Painterwood.
