To deputy district attorney J. H. Deveron a person on the witness stand is like a china doll, one of those decorative dolls that open up to reveal a series of smaller dolls hidden inside, until finally, inside the smallest one, was found a single grain of rice. Deveron thought of the progressively smaller dolls as the layers of lies and deceptions people told to hide the truth, their grain of rice. It was his job to open up those layers and get to the truth - except in this case of a missing seven-year-old girl, the truth may not be exactly what he expected.
