Janine Sherwood moves to the village of Friars Bridge to take up the post of headmistress at the village school. Glad to be able to move out of London which contains too many painful memories, she accepts the offer of a house in the village on the Chariswood estate, owned by one of the governors of the school. Sir Gavin Hampton, and soon she and her daughter, Tamsyn, are comfortably established there. At first all goes well, but then shadows from the past reach out to haunt her and fear threatens to shatter the fragile happiness she and Tamsyn have found. Danger surrounds Janine as she fights to save all she holds most dear.
