Injured in the Battle of Waterloo, Major-General William Leeds harbors scars deeper than the eye can see. He returns home under doctors’ orders after two years of convalescing in a hospital and then an asylum. William figures he’s going there to die—one way or another.
Fern Ashworth, a self-taught herbalist, works alongside her widowed, scientist father until the Earl of Burford dies. Her father takes the blame for her herbal concoction—the one the doctors claim brought about the earl’s death, but Fern knows better. Nevertheless, her father is imprisoned and she is forbidden to practice her trade ever again.
But when, out of desperation, she accepts a position as a nurse to an excentric ex-military gentleman, she sees the only hope Major-General Leeds has to lead a normal life once again is for her to use her former skills with herbs. Fern risks everything to help her unsufferable patient, for he’s inconceivably managed to touch her heart.
But will the major-general come to return her affections before she must leave to clear her father’s name? She can only hope, for he is the key to proving her father’s innocence. And the key to healing her own heart…and his.
