Steele was in trouble, wanted for a murder he didn't commit. When the lady offered to help him out, he didn't ask any questions - together they took up the killer's trail. With the posse right behind them. Steele wasn't gambling on a rosy future, with or without the lovely Lucy Tucker. Then she shot the sheriff, and Steele didn't recon on much of a future at all.
