This is an extremely dark tale. Mr. Sims does an excellent job in relating the complexities of all the novel's characters. His reading makes it easy for the listener to follow the action. There are many levels to the novel. The commentary on human nature is negative. The overall tone is downbeat but the story holds a morbid fascination. The novel presents a vivid portrait of time, place and low life characters. In spite of the depressing atmosphere, Mr. Sims' reading brings this great American novel to life.
