J.W. Walford was only a step ahead of the posse when he fetched up at the Burgess Ranch and found an unconscious woman and a hungry baby in need of his aid. Louise Burgess needed to run before the man who wished to own her arrived to stake his claim -- that he'd won her as well as the ranch in the final hand of poker her feckless late husband had played.
